Clans of Dal Riata & Ui Neill From Ireland to Argyll
The differing factions who would compete for the land and soul of
Scotland were manifesting in four very different cultures. The Angles
from Holstein, Germany; Scots from Ireland ; Native Picts; and
Britons. Scholars have been debating over old manuscripts and
oral histories for centuries as to the exact lineage of the Lamont’s
but most everyone agrees the Lamont’s descend from the Dal Riata. Anradan

Besides the Lamont’s, many other Clans trace their roots to Dal Riata
include the MacNeil’s of Barra, MacEwen’s of Otter, Gilchrist’s,
Maclachlan’s, MacSorely’s, McLay’s, McSweeny’s to name but a few. These
families have become known as the “Anradan
Kindred”. Lineage records show that our “Sir Laumon” to be the GGGgrandson
of Aedh MacNeil AKA “Anradan”
who settled on Barra in the Hebrides in 1030 AD. Aedh is the
GGGgrandson of Neil of Black Knee.Niall mac Aedh AKA “Neil of the Black Knee Glundubh” b 870 A.D; killed 919 A.D. fighting the Vikings in the Battle of Dublin. The O'Neills were the chiefs of the Cenel Eoghain tribe; their ancestral lands were sometimes called Tir Eoghain, roughly equivalent to the modern County Tyrone. The surname is derived from “Ui Niall”, meaning descendant of Niall. The Ui Niall were the great royal dynasty of Northern Ireland; they separated from their kinsmen, the Connachta, after the famous accomplishments of the legendary King Niall of the Nine Hostages. The surname, however, did not exist until after Niall Glundubh. Niall captured and drowned a murderer in 907 who had violated the sanctuary of Armagh. He campaigned repeatedly against the Danes and Vikings, but was mortally wounded in combat in Dublin. Owner of Drinking Cup at Dunvegan The 11G grandfather of Neil of the Black Knee was known as Niall mac Eochaid AKA “Niall of the Nine Hostages” from the nine counties he controlled 1. Munster, 2. Leinster, 3. Conacht, 4. Ulster, 5. Britain, 6. The Picts, 7. The Dalriads, 8. The Saxons, and 9. The Morini - a people of France, towards Calais and Picardy that he subdued and made tributary to him. . “Niall of the Nine Hostages” or Niall Nóigiallach, was the youngest son of Eochaidh Mugmedon (King of Connacht). The center of his government was at Tara. One of the first verifiable historical Irish leaders, Niall Nóigiallach was King about AD 400 to his death. In 405 he led an expedition against Britain, where it is rumored that he may have captured a young Romano-British boy named Patricus, son of Calpurnius, a local magistrate. Patricus later came to be known as St. Patrick. Niall was famed for his raids on Britain along with his brothers and sons. He eventually came to control most of the northern half of Ireland. He conquered the Uliad aristocracy, which ruled in Ulster, and by this victory and subsequent consolidation of power was able to found a dynasty, the “Ui Neill”, which gave rise to the O'Neill clan. Three of his sons founded kingdoms in Ulster (collectively the Northern Ui Neill), other sons founded kingdom in the Irish midlands (the Southern Ui Neill). Emain Macha, the capital of the Uliada, which Niall captured early on, became the capital of the Airgialla (lit: "givers of hostages"). A son of Niall, who succeeded his father at Tara circa 427-430, welcomed St. Patrick to his court in 432. Heraldry of the West Highlands Clans can give us some clues as to potential pedigrees. Quartered Coat of Arms are very characteristic of the Western Highlands using 4 elements -The Lion Rampant, The Galley, The Hand, and The Salmon. These have been used to show both family relationship and social group origins having a common affiliation that lie in the Kingdom of Dalridia. The Lion is thought to be a reference to the Royal line of Erc. Whether any of this can be believed is anyone’s guess. The fact of the matter is that it is the family lore; and that, of course, is the lure of it. DNA results of Dalridan families are starting to provide evidence that these folklore stories have credence. It is too early to say conclusively that these pedigrees have been proven as many more samples are needed. Many Clans have very active DNA programs to prove their connection to these ancient roots.
