Young Y DNA Success Stories

Case #1
John Young (bsybucks@aol.com) has identified his oldest confirmed ancestor as James Young b. 1755 Augusta Co., VA. It was believed his father was James Sr. and his grandfather was Robert Young of the Lamont Clan. In January 2005, two male descendants from this Orange/Augusta family received the results of their Y-DNA and they matched 23/25 with Haplogroup of R1b. John’s Y-DNA test confirmed his Haplotype is G2. His Y-DNA exact match with the Maynor family might normally be dismissed, but because of the rarity of this haplotype and because of the close living proximity with a Thomas Maynor in 1850 (Rocky Mount, VA), this is a strong indicator of when and how the change from R1b to G2 happened. Through extensive research, it is believed this change occurred with Thomas Maynor and Harriet Cooper and the birth (out of wed-lock) of their son, George (John’s great grandfather) in 1851. George was raised by Harriet and step-father Giles Young (grandson of James Young b. 1755). (Only about 1-2% of modern-day people of European ancestry are in Haplogroup G and even fewer are in the subgroup Haplotype G2)

Case #2 Andrew Lamont Young
Lamont Young’s

Several people have been working to prove their connections to the Lamont Young’s whose patriarch was Andrew Lamont Young born 1644 in Toward Castle, Kyles of Butte, Argyleshire, Scotland and died in Antrim Co, Ireland. Andrew’s son John had Sarah, John, Hugh, William, Jane, James & Robert.

Group 1Roy Young’s (roy_you@msn.com) paper trail leads back through Andrew to son John and grandson Robert. Roy matches both George Young (oldhiker50@aol.com) 25/25 and Earl Young (earlyoung@sbcglobal.net) 24/25 . George suspects he connects Andrew Lamont Young through his son James C. b 1673 Antrim Co, Irleand d 1749 Augusta Co, VA. Earl Young also connects his paper trail to James C Young.

Group 2 Harold Young (ShaLamont@wideopenwest.com) & James Michael Young (jmy4@aol.com) have matched 23/25 markers R1b Haplo Type. Their paper trails both leads back to Andrew Lamont Young through son John to grandson William Young b 1705 Antrim Co, Ireland d 1818 Jessamine Co KY.

The DNA of these two groups doesn’t match. Genetic testing of other offspring of Andrew Lamont Young will be needed to make a conclusive decision as to proper connections of these families. The paper trails look good so we may have a non – parental event such as an adoption in Group 2. Group 1 has people tested from 2 separate lines back to Andrew.
